Technology for manufacturing of fluid lime

Produced fluid lime (fraction is assigned by a Customer) for insufflation of liquid steel and cast iron into melt and for out-of-furnace processing of steel has a high reactionary capacity, high fluidity and long period of storage.

As it is well known, freshly burnt lime with 0 – 80 mm fraction is used for steel-smelting machines, and the fraction 0 – 10 reaches up to 10 – 20% of the total amount of lime.

The main problem of using lime is presence of the fraction 10 (and fewer mm) in lime. The fraction 10 (and fewer mm):

  • hydrates quickly (reacts with the moisture of air) and is source of injecting hydrogen into metal;
  • reduced reactionary capacity of lime;
  • complicates the process of transportation;
  • negatively influences a Company’s environmental conditions
  • loss with gas coming from steel-smelting machines, 25 – 40 % (dust);
  • increased load on the system of gas and dust removal;
  • increased load on the system of aspiration of lime supply channels;
  • boosts equipment deterioration;
  • increases shipping operations;
  • reduces gas permeability of furnace charge with the increase of dust emission when used in shaft furnaces (blast furnaces, cupola furnaces).

Thereby, approximately 15% of the total volume of lime used by a Company is not involved into the manufacturing process, but is the source of negative manufacturing, economic and environmental indicators.


Remove part of the fines 0 – 10 mm, process and use it effectively in the manufacturing technology.

Processed fluid lime has the following advantages:

  • does not hydrate (does not react with moisture), has a long period of storage;
  • has a high reactionary capacity, forms homogenous slag and active desulphurizer quickly;
  • has an increased fluidity, can be transported with the means of any mechanical and pneumatic equipment;
  • is perfectly suitable for insufflation of steel and cast iron into melt;
  • is environmentally friendly, does not create dust.

Consequently, processing steel and cast iron with fluid lime enables to solve the following problems:

  • reduce total consumption of lime by a Company;
  • reduce overall level of spoilage of a steel-smelting manufacture;
  • reduce the time of out-of-furnace processing and boost productivity of the whole technological chain;
  • boost productivity of the main steel (cast iron) smelting machines;
  • expand the range of manufactured products by producing expensive and highly profitable steel grades with a very low content of sulphur.

Introduction of the technology implies:

  • evaluation and inclusion of quantitative and qualitative manufacturing indicators in a contract;
  • development of training plans for a Customer’s personnel and specialist;

  • attainment of estimated capacity by equipment.

Upon a Customer’s will there is a possibility of turnkey approach to equipment installation.

Payback period of the project is less than a year.
